After I finally moved out and started living on my own, I realized how much I miss having another human being around me. Apart from spending 60+ hours at work lately I have been feeling lonely. I do some self care here and there but I think I need a pet or something. Anyway, I started listening to jazz and alike about when I was 17. I usually come back to jazz and specifically artists like Billie from time to time when I am deeply melancholic and/or despondent. I learned that most Jazz musicians were heavy alcohol and drug users in their day. Apparently Billie Holiday was addicted to Heroin. Anyway this song means a lot to me since it has gotten me through a lot. It is deeply meaningful if you understand the context and time in which it was written especially by a young, black female artist competing in a racialized (and segregated) United States. Jazz musicians definitely had it rough but their influence cast a wide net that is felt even today. I usually wonder what artists like Billie would think of the world today. Especially the entertainment industry (music). Like imagine the look on her face after she learns of a splendid artist by the name of Young Thug, lmao. Take Care.
